Surviving A Pandemic Financially

We’ve know for the past few years that the face of employment was changing. We’ve known for more than that that there is no possible way any person can survive on a hourly job (of any amount) alone.

Something that has changed the face of employment and addressed this issue is the gig economy. From setting your own hours, health and life insurance, 401k retirement plans and more, it’s no wonder doctors and lawyers encourage their children to get on board with these.

In a pandemic, most conventional part time and hourly jobs will be affected. Gig work on the other hand is virtually untouched. In fact research shows than during a national emergency, hours of work for gig economy workers triples.

This new employment method has been a godsend for those who identify as transgender or have a record.

Research also shows that the number one reason people of color would not participate in this new economy is pride, followed by misinformation. A good example is the rumor that you need a car to participate. Jyve, Postmates and InstaCart are good examples of 12 that require no car. Misinformation is generally spread by those who have never participated (clearly).

In this post for our life development series #NewSeason, we’re going to help those who have already jumped on board the gig economy (because you’re about to be overwhelmed with hours) as well as those who want to jump on board for the first time.

Already In

If you’re already in the gig economy during a pandemic, you’re going to see a influx of cash that you are not used to. It can be easy to spend, spend, spend. Our suggestion is to save, save, save. Consider signing up for 401k retirement plans. A good example would be InstaCart. They allow you to set aside a percentage 2% or more and provide a free financial advisory through Fidelity. This is also a good time to sign up for health or life insurance. Almost all gig jobs use Stride. Some gig jobs also offer benefits for you and your family, like Postmates.

Expect all gig jobs to increase their referral bonus (InstaCart is currently paying $1,000 per person you refer). Veterans of gig work know you can not do the work and just live off the referral bonus. The changing face of employment.

Want In

Keep in mind that during a pandemic, the normal economy shuts down and that causes those people to head over to the economy that is growing. It may be a significant wait to join the gig economy during national emergencies, however, it’s worth the wait.

Here are a list of the most popular ones, starting with the one with the most benefits, most hours and most financial gain for you: (these are available nationally)
